David J. Irwin, MD

University of Pennslyvania

Dr. David Irwin is the PI of the Penn Digital Neuropathology lab and an attending cognitive neurologist at the Perlman Center for Advanced Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Irwin comPlenaryeted his postdoctoral clinical and research fellowship in the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research and Frontotemporal dementia center at Penn. Dr. Irwin has an interest in young-onset and atypical neurodegenerative dementias and his research focuses on integrating histopathology and imaging methods to model the onset and progression of cellular degeneration in these disorders. The purpose of this approach is to develop and validate biomarkers based on gold-standard histopathology, with the overall goal of improving diagnosis of neurodegenerative dementias to facilitate clinical trials for emerging therapies targeting specific pathogenic proteins for each neurodegenerative disease (e.g. amyloid-beta, tau, TDP-43, alpha-synuclein).
